Nyírség

History and myth in the land of dragons.

This region is rich in both history and tradition. The dragon cult, which feeds on the legends of the ancestors of the Báthori family, is still alive in Nyírbátor, and the dramatic sculpture groups show its roots and the history of the noble family to the visitors on the Town Historical Promenade. The promenade, which connects the two Gothic churches, leads us to the historic medieval castle where the Báthori, the Bethlen, the Rákóczi and Károlyi families used to live. The life scenes of the wax museum in the castle show the secrets of Erzsébet Báthori, who became famous as the Blood Countess.

You can visit another ancient family nest, the Renaissance-style Vay Castle, while the interactive museum of the Dégenfeld Castle in Baktalórántháza takes us back to the past in an entertaining way.

In Kállósemjén, the visitors can admire the Kállay Mansion where the Kállay family used to live. The Kállay family is one of the ancient Hungarian noble families, who came to the Carpathian Basin as members of the conquering Hungarian elite and played a significant role in the Hungarian history over the centuries. The baroque Kállay mansion was built around 1763 by the Italian architect Salvator Aprilis, who also built the county hall of Nagykálló, by order of György Kállay. The central six rooms with the foyer form the original core of the castle, while the end of the east wing, the two-storey terraced part was attached to the building in the early 19th century. In 2020, the mansion underwent a complete renovation and now it offers a variety of programs to the visitors.

Upper Tisza

Slow down and discover the true values - this is the philosophy of slow tourism and slow relaxation, and the Upper Tisza region in the north-eastern part of Hungary has everything you need: quiet tiny villages, captivating natural environment, the possibility of active recreation on rivers and two wheels, exceptional cultural attractions on the route of the Medieval churches, local dishes handed down from generation to generation, and approachable hosts who are always happy to talk. Anyone who arrives with open eyes and an open heart will find wonderful hidden treasures here, away from the crowds of tourists.

Take a boat down the River Tisza, ride your bike on the embankment!

A force that lives, but if its mood changes, it destroys everything: the people who settled down on the banks of any river had to learn to respect the water. It is no different in the north-eastern corner of Hungary, in the upper section of the River Tisza, where people were afraid of the floods, while the dangerous marshland also provided refuge for our ancestors against the invading armies. This countryside with its many rivers is still a haven for the urban people, offering opportunities for active recreation, cultural discovery and spiritual recharge at the same time.

The Upper Tisza is the fastest, cleanest and mostly untouched section of the River Tisza, one of the most beautiful waterways in the country with high-capacity water tour bases, modern ports and well-equipped campsites in Tiszabecs and in Vásárosnamény-Gergelyiugornya. Those arriving by kayak or canoe can explore the rivers Tisza, Szamos and Túr on tours of various lengths and difficulty. While paddling a boat down the river from Tiszabecs to Tokaj, there are plenty of sights along the way, and wonderful sandy beaches (Tivadar, Gergelyiugornya) entice the visitors for a swim. For those who take the water tour for the first time, the gently trickling, shallow Old Túr is an ideal river, which is especially romantic as the trees are hanging over the water.

Tokaj Hegyalja

The Tokaj wine region has been under protection since 1737, when a royal decree declared it a closed wine region for the first time in the world. However, it also has its obligations: the wine production in this region has been strictly regulated by law for nearly 3 centuries. The cultural landscape properly presents the historical traditions of wine production, a wine specialty, established in this region as these special needs shaped the formal appearance of the cellars and the wineries, which differs from other regions of Hungary.

Every moment of the Tokaji wine’s production can be followed in the deep and ancient wine cellars of the characteristic vineyards, villages and small towns. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee added the Tokaj wine region to the World Heritage List as a Historic Cultural Landscape in 2002 to ensure the survival of the wine-growing traditions of the past thousand years in their original form as well as the millennial unity of the wine region.
